WHAT IS GIN? and WHAT IS JUNIPER?
What is Gin? Gin must be a neutral spirit distilled from something natural like wheat, barley, potatoes or grapes. The flavours of a gin come from its botanicals (that’s the herbs, seeds, flowers, plants or spices added during production), and, crucially, all gins must contain juniper.
What is Juniper? Juniper is the only botanical which is in all gins. The cones of the juniper bush (often referred to as “juniper berries”) are required by legal statute, to be present and perceptible, in order for a spirit to be called gin. Juniper is in 100% of spirits that are designated as gins.
Juniper berries are among the only spices derived from conifers, along with spruce buds. Juniper berries are actually modified conifer cones. Juniper grows throughout the Northern Hemisphere as far south as tropical Africa, including the Arctic, parts of Asia, and Central America.

Why Spirits Events?
Recent years have seen a rapid growth in the Australian gin market, with an estimated 8% of the population consuming over 12 million bottles annually – and this growth is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Of course, many of the big and globally established brands of gin dominate the market, but there is still a significant share of the market that goes to craft gin distillers. The Australian Gin Distillers Association (AGDA) was created in 2018 to promote these entrepreneurs and their products.
The AGDA organises a series of spirits events hosted in major centers such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Auckland where Australian and New Zealand craft distillers bring their unique products to the public in tasting sessions. These sessions, such as those at the listed festivals not only give members of the public the chance to sample a wide variety of spirits, but also aims to help promote the concept of drinking for pleasure in a responsible manner.
Furthermore, exposure to the public helps the distillers promote their brand while also benefiting from direct feedback from those attending the tasting sessions.
Spirits tasting in a sociable, welcoming and well-organised environment, appreciating and discovering exciting new products, and is a great way to spend a few hours in the company of like-minded people. Look out for a festival coming your way soon!
